State library cooperatives, groups of libraries and library systems across the country have been working together in the last ten years or so to establish shared storage facilities for books and journals. Moving items to storage has enabled libraries to re-purpose space for users, while libraries ensure the access to their historical collections. The Hathi Trust, Portico and other large scale cooperative projects have helped make digital preservation another way to ensure access. The University of California system has two depository operations for materials moved out of their libraries. Both are designated trusted depositories in the WEST project. The University of Missouri system’s depositories in Columbia serve an important role in preserving items and filling MOBIUS and other ILL requests. Looking at expanding and changing roles for these depositories in the context of national and regional efforts has relevance for all libraries as we continue the transition to digital access for many materials.
